My 2018 has been great so far with no major issues, and 31k miles in. My mustang before the GTI needed the whole dashboard taken apart at less than 15k miles plus a myriad of other build quality issues from the factory. My GTI definitely has been my favorite daily so far, buuuut I've been wanting to trade in for a Model 3 too.
Sadly the Golf R had the diff lock up on it and was replaced under warranty at 40K, but that is unique to only the 4wd Tiguans, Passats and Golf Rs. Otherwise the R has been as reliable as my GTI. A lot of people seem to equate today's VWs with cars like the Mk3 Jetta I owned.
